After you install WD Anywhere Backup on your computer, you can set up a backup to back up your computer to the external WD drive. If this is your first time running WD Anywhere Backup you may receive the opening screen below, if not go to Step 2 and you should be at the main backup screen. If you want to Backup all of your files, click on Back Up All of My Files and then skip to Step 10. If you want to customize your backup click on Customize My Backup and then skip to Step 3.
You can also view what fils WD Anywhere Backup does not backup by clicking on the List of files that won't be backed up below the first paragraph in the software. This is the main screen for the software. When a backup is created it will be listed here and what the status of it is. To setup a backup plan, click on Create. This shows the 3 steps that we are going to go through in order to setup a backup.
I know this reply is a little late, but I got my fist Mac in November last year and started using WD Anywhere Backup straight away. This is an amazing piece of software that I would recommend to all.
Click on Next. On the first part we will need to choose what we are backing up to. If you are using a regular directly attached drive like a USB/FireWire/eSATA drive you will click on Hard Drive.
If you are using a network drive, then click on Network Places. Click on Browse and choose where you want to back up your data. If you want to keep additional versions of your files or want to encrypt your backup, check the appropriate box and left-click on Next. If you want to backup all of the items from the SmartPicks (the items it will backup are listed below the button) click on All Items from SmartPicks and skip to Step 7. If you want to choose your own items to backup.
Click on My Own Backup Items. Put a check mark in the box next to the items that you want to back up. If you want to manually add a folder to your backup, click on Local Folders at the top and choose the folder that you want to add. When you are done, click on Select.
This screen shows what items it is going to back up and gives an estimate of the size and number of files for each entry. If you want to add aditional items click on Add Backup Items. If you want to remove an items, click on the listing so that it is highlighted and then click on Remove Selected Items. When you are done, click on Next. Give your backup a name and click on Next.
Your backup setup should now be done. Click on Done. If you receive this message it is an informational box letting you know that the computer will run a little slow during it's initial backup.
If you want to continue with the backup click on Continue. If you want to pause the backup until the computer is in an idle state, click on Pause until System Idle in the lower right corner of the box. Your backup should now be running unless you chose to pause it until the system is idle. You can leave it on the screen and watch the backup or you can click on the X in the upper right corner to close the program and it will run in the background as it backs up your computer. Note: During your first backup your computer may run slow as the software processes your files and stores them on the drive.
When the backup is finished your computer should return to normal function, and only update the backup as files are added or modified. Open the WD Anywhere Backup software. It is typically found by double-clicking on your Internal Mac drive and then going to Applications and WD Anywhere Backup.
When the program comes up, click on the + in the lower left corner and choose Create Backup Plan. The next screen will ask what you want to back up. If you want to back up all of the files on your system that WD Anywhere Backup supports, click on Backup All of My Files Files.
You can view a list of files that WD Anywhere Backup will not back up by clicking on the blue text in the paragraph. If you want to customize your backup. Click on Customize My Backup and then skip to Step 5. When you choose Backup All of My Files it will create the backup for you and then start your backup. Your backup plan has been created and it will start to back up the supported files.
When you choose Customize My Backup it will take you to the following screen where it gives you an overview of the 3 steps to create a backup plan. Click on Continue. To back up to your external drive, click on Removable Drive. Then click on Back up files to. And choose your external drive. If you want to keep additional versions of your files, or do a secure encrypted backup, then check the appropriate box under Optional and click on Continue.
This is where you choose what you want to back up. Put a checkbox next to the items that you want to back up.
If something that you want to back up is not listed, then click on Folders at the top and put a checkbox next to the folder that you want to back up. When you are done, click on Done. This screen shows all of the items that you are currently going to back up. You can add or remove items from the list by using the + and - button in the lower left. If you have added everything that you want to back up, click on Continue.
Give your backup plan a name and click on Continue. Your backup plan has been created.
Click on Done to go to the main program screen. WD Anywhere Backup will start to back up the files that you specified. You can leave the program up on your desktop or click on the red X to close the program and it will run in the background. When you have registered your drive and downloaded the software, follow the steps below to install it on your computer. Unzip/uncompress the files using some type of uncompression software like WinZip. Open the folder(s) that you have unzipped/uncompressed, and double-click on the setup file, which is usually Setup.exe. Choose which language you want for the installation and left-click on Ok.
It will then start the InstallShield Wizard. Left-click on Next. This is the End User License Agreement. This will open the install package. Double-click on WD AnyWhere Backup to start the installer. You may get a popup letting you know that the package has a program in it and if you want to continue. Click on Continue. At the Installer introduction screen, click on Continue. This is the End User License Agreement.
Click on Continue. If you agree to the terms, click on Agree. The next step is to choose the location that you want to install the program to. By default it should choose the Internal drive, which is where it should be installed. Click on Continue. It will then verify that this is where you want to install the program. Click on Install.
You may be asked to authenticate in order to allow the install to proceed. Type in your Name and Password. Then click on Ok. The software will then be installed. The install should be finished. Click on Close to close the install wizard.
